The Rubik’s cube was invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik in Hungary, though it wasn’t mass-produced until 1980. At the height of its popularity it is estimated that 200 million Rubik’s cubes were sold from 1980-1983. Each method of solving the cube has its own set of algorithms, or memorized sequences of moves, which some people can do without looking. In March of 1981 the first speedcubing event was organized by Guinness Book of World Records and it was a tie for completing the 3D puzzle in 38 seconds. The current record set in 2018 is down to 3.47 seconds!
