Geocache Description:

This cache was hidden in Arsenal Park in Lawrenceville as part of a STEAM project with 3rd-grade students from Pittsburgh Woolslair PreK-5 School.  Students learned about geocaching, including how a GPS works using latitude and longitude and also learned about the history of the Allegheny Arsenal which covered the current site of Arsenal Park.  The cache is hidden near the location of the infamous Arsenal explosion, which killed 79 civilian workers on September 17th, 1862.  It is believed that a spark from either a horseshoe or wagon wheel of a delivery wagon on the cobblestones of 40th Street ignited some spilled gunpowder that started a series of 3 explosions that claimed innocent lives, many of them children who worked in the laboratories of the Arsenal. 45 of the victims are buried in a mass grave at nearby Allegheny Cemetery.

When finding the cache, you can see the plaque commemorating the disaster and the original medallion that hung above the entryway to the Arsenal, which was built in 1814 and remained in operation until 1913.  Both of these items are mounted on the last remaining building from the Arsenal. The cache is a small camoed plastic tube.  Please seal the container tightly before replacing it.  My students are excited to see who will find their cache!  Any photos are appreciated.  Good luck!

Congratulations to Vicki&Andy for being the FTF!
