
Nihalka na Veliko planino je ena izmed treh nihalk v Sloveniji. Letno na planino prepelje okoli 60.000 potnikov in je hkrati tudi najdaljša nihalka v Evropi brez podpornih stebrov.

Ideja, da bi na Veliko planino napeljali potniško žičnico, sega v leto 1929. Takrat je v časopisu Jutro (št. 50) izšel članek, v katerem je avtor Kekca Josip Vandot predvideval, kaj bi pridobila planina, če bi imela žičnico: »Uživala bi svetovni ugled, tujski promet bi se dvignil z velikanskim zaletom, kar zna razsoden človek sam soditi«.

Kasnejše razprave o žičnici vsebujejo tudi dvome. Preveč ljudi bi lahko ogrozilo tako naravo kot tudi avtohtono življenje planine. Morda bi bilo bolje, če bi ostali pri dostopu na planino le v gojzarjih. Če pa bodo gradili žičnico, je potrebno število gostov omejevati, kar pomeni zmerne žičniške kapacitete. Kljub nekaterim pobudam za množični turizem, to zavedanje ni usahnilo vse do danes. Naprave ne smejo prepeljati »preveč« turistov. Nihalko so začeli graditi leta 1960, načrta za obe postaji pa je izdelal arhitekt Kopač, a so ju prikrojili in dodali protivetrna stekla. Pisalo se je leto 1964, bil je trinajsti september, ko je kabina s prvimi potniki uradno povzpela na Veliko planino.

Strojno pogonsko opremo za nihalko so izdelali v tovarni Stol, kjer so pod vodstvom inž. Štefula predelali pogonski del stare pomornice. Tudi večji del drugih delov strojnice, ki je skoraj brez okvar deloval od leta 1963 do leta 2011 je bil recikliran.
Zaradi usklajevanja s tehničnimi normami, veljavnimi v EU, je občina Kamnik, lastnica družbe Velika planina - Zaklad narave, leta 2011 financirala novo strojnico, z njo pa se je med drugim za 2 minuti pospešil čas vožnje. Tako je nihalka na Veliko planino z novo strojnico postala še varnejša in učinkovitejša. Velika planina d.o.o. pa je bila v letu 2014 tudi finalist prestižne nagrade Werner von Siemens, kjer so ocenjevali učinkovitost nihalke.
Nihalka je občutljiva na veter, zato jo morajo ob močnejšem severniku zaustaviti. Tako se lahko zgodi, da ostane na planini tudi po več sto ljudi. Nihalka potnike na planino pripelje v le 5 minutah, sprejme pa 32 potnikov. Za trajnostni razvoj turizma na Veliki planini, je nihalka pomemben del zgodbe, saj kot varčen in najbolj ekološki način prevoza omogoča hiter ter varen dostop na planino.
V začetku leta 2020 so bile zamenjane glavne nosilne vrvi.
Konec leta 2025 je bila zaradi poškodbe ob neurju zamenjana vlečna vrv.

The cable car to Velika planina is one of the three cable cars in Slovenia. It transports approximately 60,000 passengers to the mountain pasture annually and is also the longest unsupported cable car in Europe.

The idea of installing a cable car to Velika planina dates back to 1929. At that time, an article by Josip Vandot, using the pen name Kekec, was published in the newspaper Jutro (issue 50), envisioning the benefits the mountain pasture would gain from having a cable car: "It would enjoy worldwide renown, foreign tourism would experience a tremendous boost, as any reasonable person can judge."
Subsequent discussions about the cable car included doubts. Too many people could jeopardize both the nature and the indigenous life of the mountain pasture. It was argued that it might be better to maintain access to the pasture only by foot. However, if a cable car were to be built, the number of guests would need to be limited, meaning moderate cable car capacity. Despite some initiatives for mass tourism, this awareness has persisted until today. The construction of the cable car began in 1960, and the architectural plans for both stations were designed by architect Kopač, with the addition of wind-resistant glass. On September 13, 1964, the cabin officially ascended to Velika planina with its first passengers.
The mechanical propulsion equipment for the cable car was manufactured at the Stol factory, where the propulsion system of an old warship was modified under the supervision of engineer Šteful. Most of the other parts of the machinery, which operated with almost no failures from 1963 to 2011, were recycled.
In 2011, the Municipality of Kamnik, as the owner of the company Velika planina - Zaklad narave, financed a new machinery to comply with the technical standards applicable in the EU. Among other improvements, this reduced the travel time by 2 minutes. Thus, the cable car to Velika planina became even safer and more efficient with the new machinery. In 2014, Velika planina d.o.o. was also a finalist for the prestigious Werner von Siemens Award, where the efficiency of the cable car was evaluated.
The cable car is sensitive to wind, so it must be stopped during strong northerly winds. As a result, it is possible for several hundred people to remain on the mountain pasture. The cable car transports passengers to the mountain pasture in just 5 minutes and can accommodate 32 passengers. As an important part of the story for sustainable tourism development on Velika planina, the cable car provides quick and safe access to the mountain pasture as an economical and environmentally friendly means of transportation.
In early 2020, the main supporting ropes were replaced.
At the end of 2025, the tow rope was replaced due to storm damage.
