Geocache Description:

Church of St Mary, Wargrave, is a rather attractive Grade II* building set just off the Mill Green, host to many events organised by the village.

The originally 13th century church was burnt down in 1914 by suffragettes with the exception of the walls and north doorway and the west tower which dates from 1635.  The church was rebuilt in 1916 by W. Fellowes Prynne.  Flint walls with Bath stone dressings part rendered on north, brick tower with a gabled tiled roof.

Inside there is a five bay nave, chancel, north transept and organ chamber, south arcade and aisle with chapel.  The tower is three stages, brick plinth with stone capping, moulded stone strings, parapet, octagonal corner buttresses of chequer flint and brick with strings carried round and stone ball finials.  A west doorway in a brick arched opening, at the south east corner a staircase to the ringing chamber.  The bells are rung regularly.

Windows with intersecting tracery, altered. The north door in the nave is Norman of two orders with chevroned shafts, caps, large roll inner moulding and scalloped outer moulding.  On the north wall there are remains of Norman arcading.  The font is 15th century made from chalk and restored in the early 20thcentury.  There are some original floor slabs remaining.

The Hannen Columbarium (a mausoleum for cremated remains) was designed by Edwin Lutyens.  It was built in 1906-07 to house the ashes of Sir Nicholas Hannen, a barrister, diplomat and judge who died in Shanghai in 1900.

The Columbarium  is a Grade II* listed building in its own right, it was restored in 1985.
