Geocache Description:

The Virginian Railroad

Formed in 1909, the 600 mile Virginian Railroad was created to haul coal from the mines in West Virginia to the ships at the Sewalls Point docks in Norfolk, VA which were waiting to carry the coal to foreign ports.  It was built through the vision and financial backing of  H. H. Rogers, who hired talented people and gave them the best equipment that his money could buy.

The railroad owned 83 freight steam locomotives and nearly 15,000 coal cars.  In 1950 the VGN hauled over 28 million tons of coal.

Jarratt

The Virginian carried a modest amount of freight, much of it interlined with other carriers.  At the small town of Jarratt, the Virginian crossed the double-tracked north-south speedway of the Atlantic Coast Line. In addition to the freight handling, new steam locomotives built in Richmond were delivered via this connection. There was also a siding there that would hold a 190 car train.

In 1907, when passenger service began being developed, Jarratt was the first depot. It was located about 0.6 miles to the east of here where the tracks intersected.

This is a small cache, so BYOP and please return it to the same hiding location as you found it.
