Stari grad stoji na Krniški gori (585 m) nad mestom Kamnik. Omenja se že v 12. stoletju pod imenom Zgornji grad, ko pa so ga v 16. stoletju opustili, je začel propadati in je sedaj v ruševinah. Rodbina bavarskih grofov Andeških si je na slovenskem ozemlju pridobila obsežne posesti. V začetku 12. stoletju je imela tako v lastnini predele Gorenjske od prelaza Kozjak in Trojane pa vse do reke Kokre in Smlednika. Andeška posest je imela svoje središče v Kamniku, ki je tako postal v 13. stoletju eden izmed najbolj pomembnih krajev na Kranjskem. Leta 1202 se omenjata dva gradova, Spodnji grad, sedaj znan kot Mali grad in Zgornji grad, sedaj ruševine Starega gradu.
Stari grad se uvršča med najstarejše gradove na območju Gorenjske. Pozidan je bil na predelu prazgodovinske naselbine visoko nad mestom in utrjen z obrambnim zidom. Lega na dominantni točki je omogočala lastnikom, da so imeli nadzor nad prometnimi potmi, ki so vodile iz Štajerske skozi Tuhinjsko dolino mimo Kamnika na Gorenjsko in Primorsko. V 13. stoletju je prišel grad v last koroške plemiške rodbine Ortenburžanov in kasneje Gallenbergov, ene najstarejših kranjskih plemiških rodbin. Leta 1450 je Stari grad postal deželno knežji fevd in potem so ga habsburški vojvodi dajali v najem.
Leta 1511 je bil grad zelo poškodovan zaradi potresa, nato še zaradi požara. Najemnik Thurn se je zaradi tega najprej preselil v Kamnik, potem pa v naselje Križ. Razvaline Starega gradu niso dobro ohranjene. Zaradi posega v vzhodni del objekta, ko so po drugi svetovni vojni na ruševinah postavili planinsko kočo, so le na zahodnem območju platoja ohranjene razvaline nekdanjega gotskega gradu.
Delno se je ohranilo tudi južno obzidje, kjer so vidni trije vhodi in strelne line. Na glavnem platoju je v osnovi ohranjen obrambni stolp, ki ima pravokotni tloris.
Danes se na gradu nahaja Grajsko gostišče z otroškim igriščem in "adrenalinska" razgledna ploščad (ploščad je trenutno še zaprta).
Dostop:
Do vrha vodita dve lahki, urejeni in označeni poti iz centra Kamnika, ki sta primerni tudi za družine z majhnimi otroci.
Hoja v hrib traja približno pol ure, premagati pa morate približno 200 metrov nadmorske višine. Do gradu in gostišča pelje tudi asfaltirana cesta.

The Old Castle stands on Krniška Gora (585 m) above the town of Kamnik. It is mentioned as early as the 12th century under the name Zgornji grad, but when it was abandoned in the 16th century, it started to deteriorate and is now in ruins. The Bavarian Counts of Andechs acquired extensive possessions in the Slovenian territory. In the early 12th century, they owned parts of the Gorenjska region, from the Kozjak and Trojane passes to the Kokra and Smlednik rivers. The Andechs possessions had their center in Kamnik, which became one of the most important places in Carniola in the 13th century. In 1202, two castles are mentioned, Spodnji grad, now known as Mali grad, and Zgornji grad, now the ruins of the Old Castle.
The Old Castle is among the oldest castles in the Gorenjska region. It was built on the site of a prehistoric settlement high above the town and fortified with defensive walls. Its dominant position allowed the owners to have control over the trade routes leading from Styria through the Tuhinj Valley, past Kamnik to Gorenjska and Primorska. In the 13th century, the castle came into the possession of the Carinthian noble family Ortenburg and later the Gallenberg family, one of the oldest noble families in Carniola. In 1450, the Old Castle became a land princely fief and was subsequently leased by the Habsburg dukes.
In 1511, the castle was severely damaged by an earthquake and later by a fire. The tenant Thurn first moved to Kamnik and then to the settlement of Križ. The ruins of the Old Castle are not well-preserved. Due to interventions in the eastern part of the structure, when a mountain hut was built on the ruins after World War II, only the ruins of the former Gothic castle are preserved in the western area of the plateau. Part of the southern wall, with three entrances and firing lines, has also been preserved. The main plateau still has the preserved foundation of a defensive tower with a rectangular floor plan.
Today, the castle houses a castle restaurant with a children's playground and an "adrenaline" viewing platform (the platform is currently closed).
Access:
There are two easy, well-maintained, and marked paths from the center of Kamnik leading to the top, suitable for families with small children.
The ascent takes about half an hour, and you need to climb approximately 200 meters in altitude. There is also an asphalt road leading to the castle and the restaurant.
Recommendation:
The cache is a two-stage multi. It is worth going on foot instead of using any means of transportation.
