The Monkey Cache Traditional Cache

KtuLi: Well, it is over two years since we started this project, and it has been tons of fun. We've got just under 100 monkeys running around this great globe of ours...

However, in the whole spirit of GeoCaching, we need to think about the impact caches have on the various places we find so enjoyable on this planet. That, combined with the fact that the base cache no longer had any monkeys left in it, has made me decide to remove the Monkey Cache base cache.

I've not decided whether this will be a temporary thing or not. We'll see whether I decide to gather up the materials to tag another bunch of monkeys.

And as always, thanks for participating in the Monkey Cache - we couldn't have done it without you!

Geocache Description:

Located along Wolf Rock trail, which is in Laurel Summit Park, which is at the top of the mountain in Linn Run Park.

The best way to describe this cache would be to send you over to the website for the cache: http://www.monkeycache.com/

If that isn't working for some reason, the basic idea is this: the cache is a 'barrel' of monkeys. Each monkey has its own identification tag with a unique number. The goal is to take a monkey from one cache and move it to another cache. Then you email us and let us know which monkey you took, where you picked it up from, and where you took it to. If you want to send pictures, that's great too! Basically, we'd like to see how far from home the monkeys get (we'll track them on the website)

Special Notes About the Cache:
  • When taking monkeys, please only take one or two monkeys at most. If you would like to take more monkeys, please email us prior to going to the cache.
  • Please hide the cache in the same manner you find it. Recently, caches with monkeys have been plundered by non-GeoCachers. Please make the cache unable to be seen by simply walking by - this will reduce the chances of it being found by a non-GeoCacher.
  • Exchanging things for monkeys is not necessary. I will try to make sure that the cache stays well stocked with monkeys. Any other items in the cache will usually be moved to other caches by me.

Now, a little information about the cache itself, and the surrounding area. Linn Run State Park is a beautiful area out towards Ligoneer. I'd get some directions, but I invariably end up taking a slightly different path each time I end up going there (which is rather often). The directions provided by MapBlast are dead on... follow them if you are unfamiliar with the area. I've been going to the Laurel Summit park since I was rather young - my mom likes the park a lot since her father worked there with the Conservation Corps back in the 1930's.

Anyway, the parking lot we suggest is located at N40 7.099, W79 10.596 (please excuse the numbers if they aren't good, I was having trouble getting a good signal there). Alternatively, towards the bottom of the mountain, there is a playground near the park office, the coordinates of that are N40 9.255, W79 12.765. Just take Linn Run Road all the way up to the top. Where you should park will be clearly marked as Laurel Summit State Park. Head to the parking area in the back and at the back of the parking lot you will see signs for the trail. And that is all the hints you get for that...

Ok, one more piece of information... as the trail name indicates, there are TONS of rocks in the area. I'd suggest keeping your eyes on the trail and not your GPS. The terrain isn't all that difficult, but with all the rocks, we figured a 2.5 would be a fair level for that. We don't want anyone falling and hurting themselves, or even just breaking their GPS unit. Watch where you're going.
