Geocache Description:

Begravelsen fandt sted i ca. 920. I museet ses bl.a. Ladby-tapetet, et nutidigt svar på Bayeux-tapetet.

In English

Having found the cache you are in front of a unique spot: the grave of the Ladby King, the only ship burial in Denmark, the only place in the world where you can walk into the tomb itself. The burial took place about 920. Being buried in a Viking warship has been an enormous demonstration of power. The items following the king into his grave show that the royal family has had an international, cosmopolitan life style. Clothes in oriental style, a belt buckle from the imperial workshop in Metz in France, exclusive knives etc. He also brought 11 horses and 3 or 4 dogs with him to Valhalla. - Today the ship is seen as an imprint in the ground with a lot of horse bones and teeth, iron rivets and an anchor. I recommend that you see the reconstruction of the burial in the basement of the museum before you go for "the real thing". About 30 years after the burial the grave was broken into. The grave robbers knew what they came to get: the body of the king, his sword, other signs of power. One theory about the robbery is that it was politically inspired. In Jutland Harold Bluetooth had started to gather the kingdom of Denmark. Eliminating all signs of the former royal family may have helped this project.  - In the summer time you can see the Ladby Dragon, a copy full size of the warship, at the jetty below the mound  . Twice a week it may be sailing in the cove. - In the museum you can see the Ladby Tapestry, a contemporary equivalent of the Bayeux Tapestry.
