Geocache Description:

Welcome to the historic and abandoned Upper Texas Springs Cemetery, which was established in 1856. It is one of two small cemeteries established at Texas Springs (a former townsite in Shasta County) both of these cemeteries are still here in the area today but the second one called the Lower Texas Springs Cemetery is located on private property. This cemetery is truly an abandoned lost to time cemetery and it's first recorded burial was the infant daughter of John W. Hufford and Margaret (George) Hufford in 1856. Today, only a few headstones remain some are broken from being vandalized over the years, and the rest are sandstone markers. None of the headstones or markers have names on them. You may see sections of the cemetery with flowers as well. I plan on holding future CITO events or Earth Day events here to help take care of this abandoned and oft-forgotten cemetery. According to the cemetery records at the Shasta Historical Society in Redding these are the people who are buried here:

Infant Hufford (1870-1870)

Infant Hufford (1856-1856)

Ella Hufford (1861-1863)

Jefferson Hufford (December 24, 1861 - August 7, 1867)

Martha Patsy (Dean) Hufford (1803-1868)

Rita Price (dates unknown)

George Lee Simmons (April 5, 1863 - October 10, 1863) son of James M. Simmons and Marticia (Barnes) Simmons.

The former town site of Texas Springs, which is located in Shasta County, California, was designated as California Historical Landmark No. 3, on June 6, 1969, and was settled in 1849 during the California Gold Rush. This settlement was located at the intersection of Texas Springs and Honeybee Roads south of the town of Centerville. Most of this former ghost town is on private property but there are still reminders of its former hey-day such as the Upper Texas Springs Cemetery, the Lower Texas Springs Cemetery, the Lamb memorial, and the Texas Springs Rock Quarry.
