Geocache Description:

What is Pyramid Peak?

Pyramid Peak is a mountain in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. It is the 25th highest mountain in Colorado and the 10th highest peak in the Front Range. Pyramid Peak is located in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, which is a popular hiking and backpacking destination.

How was Pyramid Peak formed and Why is Pyramid Peak shaped like a pyramid?

Pyramid Peak is shaped like a pyramid because of the way it was formed. The mountain was formed by the collision of two tectonic plates, which caused the Earth's crust to buckle and fold. The folding process created the triangular shape of the mountain.

Specifically, the formation of Pyramid Peak is due to a process called glacial cirque erosion. Glaciers are large masses of ice that flow over the land. As they flow, they erode the land beneath them. The glaciers erode the land by plucking and shattering the rock. Plucking occurs when the ice freezes to the rock and then pulls away, breaking off pieces of rock. Shattering occurs when the ice melts and refreezes, creating cracks in the rock.

Glaciers erode the land in a characteristic way. They erode the land in a circular pattern, creating bowl-shaped depressions called cirques. Cirques are typically steep-sided and have a flat bottom.

When several cirques erode the sides of a mountain, they can create a pyramid-shaped peak. This is because the cirques erode the sides of the mountain, but they do not erode the top of the mountain. The top of the mountain is left as a sharp point.

Pyramid Peak is an example of a glacial horn. A glacial horn is a type of peak that is formed by the erosion of several cirques. Glacial horns are often found in mountainous areas that have been glaciated in the past. A glacial horn is a type of peak that is formed by the erosion of several cirques. Cirques are bowl-shaped depressions that are carved out of the bedrock by glaciers. When several cirques erode the sides of a mountain, they can create a pyramid-shaped peak. This is because the cirques erode the sides of the mountain, but they do not erode the top of the mountain. The top of the mountain is left as a sharp point.

Glacial horns are often found in mountainous areas that have been glaciated in the past. Some of the most famous glacial horns in the world include the Matterhorn in the Alps, the Grand Teton in Wyoming, and the Three Sisters in Oregon.

Glacial horns are formed by a process called plucking. Plucking occurs when the ice in a glacier freezes to the bedrock and then pulls away, breaking off pieces of rock. As the glacier moves, it carries these pieces of rock away, eroding the bedrock beneath it.

The erosion caused by plucking is most effective at the edges of a glacier. This is because the ice at the edges of a glacier is thinner and moves more quickly than the ice in the center of the glacier. As a result, the edges of a glacier are able to erode the bedrock more effectively than the center of the glacier.

Over time, the erosion caused by plucking can create a deep, bowl-shaped depression in the bedrock. This depression is called a cirque. When several cirques erode the sides of a mountain, they can create a pyramid-shaped peak.

How do you get to Pyramid Peak?

The best way to get to Pyramid Peak is to start at the Brainard Lake Recreation Area. From the recreation area, you can hike to the summit on the North Fork Trail. The hike to the summit is about 4 miles long and has an elevation gain of 3,000 feet.
