Geocache Description:

This geocache is placed to thank the Mr. and Mrs. Stabeez team, for their water cache series along the Otonabee River.

It takes a lot of dedication to maintain geocaches on the Otonabee River, as we discovered when we hid about 50 geocaches along the east/west stretch between Squirrel's Creek and Campbelltown several years ago. Every spring, the river swells and erodes its banks, taking trees downstream and washing geocaches away. After a few discouraging spring floods, my husband and I decided to archive our series. But Stabeez lives closer and they love this river so much that they paddle here very often during late spring, summer and fall. It makes me happy to see new geocaches popping up where we once had ours. To thank Stabeez for their new series, we decided to renew a couple of our nearby caches on this river that can be so peaceful and beautiful certain times of the year. There is a current in springtime, (it flows from Lake Huron down to Lake Ontario), and the current does exist in summer and fall, though it's certainly not strong, and there are no rapids. In summer and fall, during calm winds, it will feel like a flat paddle with still waters.

The Otonabee River is part of the Trent Severn Waterway System, and does see a fair amount of large boat traffic in the summer, especially on weekends. If you are using a canoe or kayak to paddle the Otonabee, I would suggest you get an early start in the morning. You could also wait until September or October and you might have the whole river to yourself, as it can be very quiet during those months. The Otonabee is where I video-taped a deer swimming across the river in front of my kayak. Enjoy your time on the water. Here's a geocache for Stabeez to find, and one more reason for you to come to this beautiful river.
