MK23 Wildlife Trail J - Jay
For our next bird we move across to Hazeley Wood in the west of Milton Keynes. One of our newer parks it was planted in 1991 and includes hazel, oak, beech, hornbeam and ash which supports a wide range of invertebrates and fungi.
Our star of this show though are the Jays which gather later in the years to gather acrons for their winter food. Jays can be quite secretive but then in the autumn and winter look out for a flash of blue as they are out gathering to 'cache' (actual technical term) their winter larder. Jays are actually responsible for distributing acorns leading to new trees rather than just eating them so are an important part of the generation of woodland.

This is one of 26 caches celebrating the flora and fauna of Milton Keynes, it's not just concrete cows and roundabouts. How many of our different plants and animals can you spot in our City? Please do add photos to yours logs
All the caches are on a walk near Willen Lake and can be easily navigated. They are all available from running the Wherigo cartridge which is available here: MK23 Wildlife Trail
Thank you to the Parks Trust and MKGees for their help and permission to set these caches.
