MK23 Wildlife Trail N - Newts
The Parks and wetlands around Milton Keynes are a great opportunity for newts. There are three types of newt in the UK, the smooth, palmate and the most famous is the Great Crested Newt. The Great Crested Newt is often cited in building works and they are a protected species.
As an amphibian they split their time between land and aquatic environments. Thy prefer fish free ponds through grass and woodlands which give them space in water to breed and dry land to hibernate in winter. The Parks Trust are dedicated to providing safe spaces for newts and have annual surveys and ask that people provide freshwater ponds, log piles and compost heaps for them.
This is one of 26 caches celebrating the flora and fauna of Milton Keynes, it's not just concrete cows and roundabouts. How many of our different plants and animals can you spot in our City? Please do add photos to yours logs
All the caches are on a walk near Willen Lake and can be easily navigated. They are all available from running the Wherigo cartridge which is available here: MK23 Wildlife Trail
Thank you to the Parks Trust and MKGees for their help and permission to set these caches.
