MK23 Wildlife Trail Z - Zzzzz nightime for bats
Bats are one of the cornerstones of conservation in our parks and there are regular bat walks hosted by the Parks Trust. These can be done across the City but are usualy focused on Caldecott Lake, Furzton Lake and Stony Stratford Nature Reserve. It is possible you could see bats at almost any location so keep your eyes peeled at dusk, particularly in autumn when they swarm befoire hibernating.
There are 18 species of bat in the UK and they make up a quarter of all mammal species, although only 10 species have been spotted, so far, in Milton Keynes. They hunt for their food using echolocation and can eat up to 3,000 insects in one night! From the small Pipistrelle to the large Noctule there is a lot to love about bats. You'll spot the bat boxes amongst the trees.
This is one of 26 caches celebrating the flora and fauna of Milton Keynes, it's not just concrete cows and roundabouts. How many of our different plants and animals can you spot in our City? Please do add photos to yours logs
All the caches are on a walk near Willen Lake and can be easily navigated. They are all available from running the Wherigo cartridge which is available here: MK23 Wildlife Trail
Thank you to the Parks Trust and MKGees for their help and permission to set these caches.
