Geocache Description:

This area was originally a hunting ground for the Osage tribe.  Then it became home to the Cherokee tribe (1818 – 1829) before its move to Oklahoma.  The first white settler moved to the area in 1834, followed in 1835 by Dr. Thomas Russell, for whom the town is named.  Incorporated in 1870, Russellville grew slowly until the railroad was built, when it experienced a commercial and population boom.  In 1887, Pope County residents voted to move the county seat to Russellville from Dover.

Early local industries included a wagon and plow factory, a canning and evaporation plant, a large foundry and machine shop, and numerous mills.  Today, the city supports a nuclear power plant, automobile parts manufacturing, and the processing of frozen foods and poultry.  It also is home to Lake Dardanelle State Park and the Old Post Lock & Dam on the Arkansas River.
