Mdou Moctar is the stage name of Mahamadou Souleymane, a Tuareg guitarist from Niger, and is his skill with his instrument is unmatched. His latest albums have received strong reviews from such publications as Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and The Guardian.
The most impressive part of his slick fingerwork is the fact that he doesn't use a guitar pick (step aside Yngwie Malmsteen).
Moctar's music first got attention from being shared through the African cellphone and memory card trading network, and from there was added to a compilation of West African music. American Christopher Kirkley of Sahel Sounds loved the music so much that he reached out to Moctar to help record albums for him, and the rest is history.
