This cache was installed to commemorate the mysterious object "Big Iron Ball" - another name "Teppontama" - near Nagasaki Port.
Since the Edo period, there are many unknown points about the origin of this ball. However, it has been famous as one of Nagasaki's specialties since ancient times, and at that time there were no other iron balls as large as this, and it is considered a valuable material from the history of casting in Japan. Measure around 175 cm in circumference, 52 cm in minor axis, and 55.7 cm in major axis.

この玉の由来については、江戸時代当時から不明な点が多い。しかし、古来より長崎名物の一つとして有名であり、当時これ程大きな鉄製の玉は他になく、我が国鋳物史の上からも貴重な資料と考えられている。周約175センチメートル、短径約52センチメートル、長径約55.7センチメートルを測る。鉄玉の製作年については、長崎の鋳物師（いもじ）の阿（安）山(あやま)一族が盛んに活躍し、大きな梵鐘などを手がけた17世紀中頃と推測される。なお、2段目の台座は、明治25年（1892）の顕彰による製作物である。
この玉は、大砲の弾丸でない可能性があり、江戸時代当時に呼び名が定まらなかった背景もあるため、文化財指定にあたり、「大波止の鉄玉」と呼称し、長年の愛称「鉄砲玉」を併記することとした。
