About Village Sign Caches
This cache belongs to the Village Sign Series, a series of caches based on ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (generally on the village green!).
The signs can be made of different materials from fibreglass to wood, from forged steel to stone. They can depict anything from local industry to historical events. The tradition probably started in Norfolk or Suffolk and has now spread across most of the country so we thought we would base a series on them!
More information and statistics can be found at the Village Signs Website - https://www.villagesignseries.co.uk
Welcome to Greenfield.
Greenfield is a small 'End' situated to the East of Flitwick Moor. It extends mainly along one road with few offshoots. Many of the original inhabitants would have worked as peat cutters on the moor and would have been very poorly paid. There was at one time a mill at the bottom of Mill Lane on the river Flit. There is only one remaining pub, no church, no shop but a school is situated on the road to Pulloxhill.
The village sign itself is very similar to those in most Bedfordshire villages having been commisioned by the County council to commemorate the Festival of Britain in 1951. This is reflected in the Festival emblem to the left of the village name and the Bedfordshire arm, with the motto Constant Be, to the right.
Now to find the cache. Stand at the sign and look accross the road. There is a stopped clock with a plaque beneath bearing the words 'THIS CLOCK WAS ERECTED BY SUBSCRIPTION IN COMMEMORATION OF HER MAJESTY'S JUBILEE'. There are 4 numbers under the inscription, these are ABBC.
The cache can be found at N 52 00.AC(C-A) W 000(A+A)C.(A+B)(C-A-A)(A+A)

If anybody would like to expand the Village Sign Series, please do. I would ask that you request a number for your cache first by filling in the new request form on the Village Sign Series website villagesignseries.co.uk https://www.villagesignseries.co.uk so we can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
