Geocache Description:

In the Rif Mountains, a 30-60 minute walk from Akchour, lies a very special natural spectacle. The Bridge of God is a natural arch of impressive proportions and this Earthcache covers these natural arches.

Natural arches are holes in the rock completely surrounded by stone. They are reminiscent of naturally formed bridges or gates.

They are usually caused by erosion under special conditions. The decisive factor here is the type of rock (longer-lasting arches are usually sandstone or limestone), as well as the shape of the rock formation and the way the erosion processes interact (water, gravity, temperature changes, etc.). Here the Oued Farda River has eroded the limestone of the Rif Mountains and, over many years, eroded the hole under the bridge so that it appears as it does today. The red color of limestone is caused by a high clay content.

Q U E S T I O N S

After you have sent me your answers to the following questions, you can log immediately. In case something is wrong, I'll get in touch again.

  1. Explain in your own words how the rock gate was created here.
  2. Estimate the dimensions (height, width) of the rock gate.
  3. What causes the red color in limestone?
  4. Upload a picture of yourself and the Bridge of God in the background with your log.

Have fun answering the questions

  2. Schätzt die Maße (Höhe, Breite) des Felsentores ab.
  3. Was verursacht die rote Farbe im Kalkstein?
