You are standing on what is locally known as the red bridge, even though it is painted green, above the Afon Llyfni. This small river rises as a stream in Drws-y-Coed, flows via Llyn Nantlle Uchaf, then flows a further 5 miles before entering the sea at Pontllyfni.
With any mining/quarring activity flooding is always a problem. As Dorothea Quarry expanded and deepened its working the risk of flooding increased. In 1884 several men were drowned when the Afon Llyfni broke through flooding the quarry. In 1895, this section of the river was realigned and deepened thus helping to cure some of the flooding issues.

When quarring ceased here in 1971 it took 7 years for water the to reach todays levels
Note the terrain rating - no need to ascend or descend from the bridge.
