Geocache Description:

Church Micro 14794...Seaborough

Welcome to St. John's Church, Seaborough.

A Grade II listed building, much of the current church dates from 1882 when it was largely restored and rebuild.  There has been a church building on this site as early as the 15th century, although when pulling down the church's porch roof during the 1882 restoration, they discovered a 13th-century effigy of a crusader being used as a linel over the door!  No one was aware of it's existance, and it's head was damaged and arms broken off.  The likely person it is meant to be is John Golde of Seaborough, who was a crusader who fought at the Siege of Damietta in 1219.

Architecture

The current building is made of local stone with hamstone dressings; the roof is covered in slate.  The building is made up of a nave, chancel, north transept, north vestry and south porch.  The west gable houses a bell-cot for two bells (which date from 1712), and on the east gable is a stone cross.  During the 1882 restoration the barrel-vaulted roof used panels from Oslo.

Interior

A lot of the interior dates from 1882 and consists of gifts to the church, including the altar cloth, velvet drappery, lectern, reading desk, brass cross and candlesticks.  However, the pulput and font date from the original church, whilst the communion table and coffin stool are from the 17th century.  More recently a stained glass window was installed in the transept in 1928 in memory of William Rowland Mitchell of nearby Seaborough Court.

The Cache

You are looking for a camo covered, hand sized plastic button jar.  The log is double-potted within it.  Please be careful as the footpath entrance the cache is placed near appears little used and maintained.  There is no need to attempt to go over the stile gate.
