Geocache Description:

Jenny and the Dancer

This is a little-known monument to a World War I aviator named Vernon Castle. In addition to being an accomplished fighter pilot and flight instructor during World War I, Vernon and his wife Irene were a famous nightclub dance team. There was a movie made about them starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Benbrook Field was one of three airfields around Fort Worth used to train pilots during World War I. The main aircraft used for the training was the Curtiss JN4D “Jenny”. A replica of a Jenny tops the monument.

Vernon Castle died in a crash during a training flight on February 15, 1918. He stalled during a maneuver to avoid a collision with another plane. The student pilot and Vernon’s pet monkey survived the crash.

To claim credit for this cache email me the name of the monkey exactly as it appears on the monument. To email me just click on "profile" next to my name at the top of this page. If you include the answer in your log (even if encrypted) it will be deleted.
