William Ellis, James Yeo Sr, and his sons William Yeo, James Yeo Jr, and John Yeo were all entrepreneurs and forward-thinking business men who individually contributed to the success of the shipbuilding and mercantile operations in this area. The Yeo family created a vertically integrated business where they controlled every aspect of their endeavours from securing the raw product to its eventual sale in England. Near here, at the shipbuilding site and wharves of James Yeo Jr., ships were constructed, timber and farm produce were loaded to be shipped overseas to be received by brother William Yeo in Appledore, England. The spin-off from the entrepreneurial endeavours of these individuals created a local economic impact of tremendous importance, with an employee payroll greater than that of the Government of PEIsland at the time. While enjoying the peaceful view between the cache site and where the wharves were located on Campbell Creek, it is diffficult to comprehend how many tall ships would have been sitting at anchor or at the wharves loading or unloading of their cargo. How much hustle and bustle would be on and around these wharves, or in this former field during the Golden Era of shipbuilding here in Green Park?? ………………. I wish to take this opportunity to thank the personnel within the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation, who over the years preserved the shipbuilding stories, and developed this historic Park for us to enjoy and experience the history of our forefathers.
