Geocache Description:

Green Park House

Green Park house was built in 1865, a neo-gothic country style.  It has a steeply pitched roof and intricate gingerbread.  The large verandas probably sufficed as an entertainment area in summer; Meacham Atlas 1880 illustrates adults playing a game of croquet on the front lawn.  A cupola was built so James Yeo could watch the comings and goings of ships and work in the shipyard.

The interior of the house is solid and spacious, laid out in a very simple pattern.  The center hall separates the dining and sitting rooms from the library and living room spaces.  One of the most interesting rooms is the kitchen with its huge, open hearth.  Servant’s quarters are to the back of the house.

At the time of the completion of the house in 1865, the Industrial Revolution had swept the Victorian homes and the technology combined with craftmanship produced abundance of well-made consumer goods.  The trend was to pack as many knick knacks, furnishings, and fabric items into a room.  Furniture factories were thriving on PEI, but there is no doubt some items were brought from Britain by the Yeo ships.  We can also imagine Sarah, the lover of flowers and gardens, also attending to indoor plants, and setting up corners of the the sitting room for “hobbiests.”  The house does not contain original furniture, but it does contain furniture from the era.

One of the many 1973 Centennial projects was the restoration of the old Yeo homestead.  The 40th anniversary of the opening as a provincial museum, under the auspices of PEI Museum and Heritage, was celebrated on July 28, 2013.
