During the 2018 eruption, this stretch of Kupono Street was a crazy sight! A totally impassable volcanic hell! Kilauea Volcano's East Rift Zone had opened. Lava vents had formed a line stretching northeast to southwest. Eventually they would be named Fissures 1-24. Today, you can drive down a nicely paved road and park right next to the remains of Fissure 9. Incredibly, it's still steaming and belching a mild sulfur odor 5 years after the eruption ended! After you gawk and snap some pictures you can cross the street and grab a quick smiley.
