一の橋は、御殿川（おどのがわ）に架る橋で、橋を渡ると霊域となります。
一の橋の名前の由来は、奥之院の入口にある一つ目の橋であるため、通称で一の橋とよばれています。
正式名称は大渡橋（おおばし）です。
奥之院へは一の橋から参拝するのが正式となっています。
弘法大師は参詣する人々を、ここまで送り迎えをすると言い伝えられており、お参りする人はここで礼拝してから渡ります。
一の橋から御廟まで約2キロメートルの参道には、おおよそ20万基を超える諸大名の墓石や、慰霊碑の数々が、樹齢千年に及ぶ杉木立の中に立ち並んでいます。

The 2-kilometer approach from Ichinohashi to the mausoleum is lined with more than 200,000 tombstones of feudal lords and numerous memorial monuments in a cedar grove that is over 1,000 years old.
