Structural engineers create human-made structures. Structural engineering uses mechanics, materials science, and mathematics to understand how structures support self-weight and imposed loads.
Concrete is a composite material composed of aggregate bonded together with a cement. Concrete has relatively high compressive strength, but much lower tensile strength. To increase its overall tensile strength, steel rods (rebar) can be embedded in concrete before it is set.
This cache acknowledges the use of concrete and reinforcing steel in building construction.
