This series highlights Canada's stunning parks and sites that protect the environment and showcases the various historic aspects of our country. Parks Canada protects and administers 37 national parks, 10 national park reserves, 171 (out of 1004) national historic sites, 5 national marine conservation areas, and one national urban park (as of 2023).
Lying along the west coast of Vancouver Island in the traditional territories of the Nuu-chah-nulth (“along the mountains and sea”) First Nations (who are now 14 distinct nations), Pacific Rim NPR (B.C.) boasts kilometres of long sandy beaches, temperate rainforests, and the 75 km. West Coast backcountry hiking trail. The park represents the coastal lowland forests of the Pacific Coast Mountain region, and the near shore waters of Vancouver Island's shelf marine region. As the traditional guardians of the lands and waters, the First Nations Huu-ay-aht, Ditidaht and Pacheedaht Guardians work with Parks Canada to care for the trails and protect the land and visiting hikers.
