Geocache Description:

I have always called this island "Logger's Island" because of the huge stump in the middle of the island. We looked around for the rest of the good-sized white pine that had been cut down, but it was nowhere to be seen. You can Google the history of the logging that took place on this lake and all along the Crowe River back in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The "Marmora Historical Society" has records of those activities, sometimes with photographs. The effectiveness of the method of "selective cutting" can be clearly seen on this island with all the newer growth coming up nice and healthy all around where they cut the Northern white giant from the middle of the island. While you are enjoying the tranquility of the lake, recall that trees are Earth's oldest living things. If a stump could speak, oh the stories it could tell !
