#4 Vamos ao Espigão 🌽 Traditional Cache

O Pico do Espigão eleva-se até aos 270 metros de altitude. Situa-se na zona oeste da ilha, no alto dos “Morenos”, compreendendo assim, o setor ocidental, caracterizado pelas escoadas basálticas.

No cume do Pico do Espigão, ainda são visíveis os restos da construção de uma pequena casa que serviu de vigia às baleias. Toda a área envolvente ao Pico do Espigão, incluindo os Morenos e os seus escarpados adjacentes, antes do repovoamento florestal, serviu de pastoreio, especialmente ao de ovelhas que iam beber água à nascente do Ribeiro Fundo, ainda ali existente.

Segundo a tradição oral, a denominação do Pico do Espigão, proveio do facto, do cume ser pontiagudo, em ângulo oblíquo, o que era popularmente comparado ao espigão (conhecido na Madeira, como empena) dos telhados.

      Pico do Espigão rises to an altitude of 270 metres. It is located in the west of the island, at the top of “Morenos”, thus comprising the western sector, characterized by basaltic flows.

At the top of Pico do Espigão, the remains of the construction of a small house that served as a lookout for whales are still visible. The entire area surrounding Pico do Espigão, including the Morenos and its adjacent cliffs, before the reforestation, was used for grazing, especially for the sheep that went to drink water at the source of the Ribeiro Fundo, which still exists there.

According to oral tradition, the name of Pico do Espigão came from the fact that the peak is pointed, at an oblique angle, which was popularly compared to the ridge (known in Madeira as a gable) on the roofs.

Vamos ao Espigão, é um grupo de 6 caches, sendo estas, 5 tradicionais e 1 mistério (bónus).  O objetivo deste grupo de caches é proporcionar um passeio agradável pela falha do Pico do Espigão, onde irá ser guiado pelos coelhos e pela beleza característica da Ilha da Porto Santo. Ao longo deste passeio, irão prevalecer as excelentes vistas sobre diversos pontos da Ilha do Porto Santo, em simultâneo, com o enriquecimento geológico sobre o setor ocidental da ilha. Neste trilho, poderá ver as diversas escoadas basálticas, tanto subaéreas como submarinas. Na área envolvente à falha, denominam as escoadas de clastolavas basálticas. A vegetação aqui presente é igualmente ímpar.

De modo a realizar este grupo de caches em segurança, é necessário o uso de vestuário adequado, principalmente do calçado, dado a irregularidade do solo. Devido à altimetria, é recorrente também, as bruscas mudanças de tempo. Evite a realização deste trilho em situações de tempo adverso. Embora pelo trilho, o caminho seja maioritariamente seguro, para encontrar as caches, deverá por norma, afastar-se ligeiramente do trilho, e é aí que pedimos cautela. Procure sempre situações de segurança, para si, e para os que o acompanham.

As caches são todas simples, contendo apenas um logbook. Assim, deverá trazer consigo, material de escrita. Como já foi dito anteriormente, tenha em atenção à cor das tampas dos recipientes das diversas caches ao longo desta sequência, pois as mesmas, irão ser precisas para a conclusão da “#Bónus Vamos ao Espigão.

      Let's go to Espigão, it's a group of 6 caches, these being 5 traditional and 1 mystery (bonus). The objective of this group of caches is to provide a pleasant walk through the fault of Pico do Espigão, where you will be guided by the rabbits and by the characteristic beauty of the Island of Porto Santo. Along this walk, the excellent views over several points of the Island of Porto Santo will prevail, simultaneously with the geological enrichment of the western sector of the island. On this trail, you can see the various basaltic drains, both underwater and underwater. In the area surrounding the fault, they call the basaltic clastolava flows. The vegetation present here is equally unique.

In order to carry out this group of caches safely, it is necessary to wear suitable clothing, especially footwear, given the unevenness of the ground. Due to the altimetry, sudden weather changes are also recurrent. Avoid doing this trail in adverse weather conditions. Although on the trail, the path is mostly safe, to find the caches, you should, as a rule, move slightly away from the trail, and this is where we ask for caution. Always look for safety situations, for yourself and those accompanying you.

The caches are all simple, containing only a logbook. Therefore, you should bring with you writing material. As mentioned before, pay attention to the color of the lids of the containers of the various caches throughout this sequence, as they will be needed to complete the “#Bónus Vamos ao Espigão.

Após concluir a ingreme subida, desde a #3 Vamos ao Espigão, até esta cache, deverá, numa zona já mais regular, encontrar naturalmente a cache. Está, à imagem das anteriores, junto do esqueleto deste pico. Procure pelas fotos adicionais designadas, “vista a partir da cache”. Não precisa, novamente, de aproximar-se do abismo, seguindo assim, situações de segurança. No seu registo, aproveite para dizer por que rota veio, se pela dos cautelosos, ou pela dos aventureiros. Quanto à cache, deixe tudo como encontrou, ou melhor.

      After completing the steep climb, from #3 Vamos ao Espigão, to this cache, you should, in a more regular area, naturally find the cache.
