Quarryman’s Wedge
Nashoba Brook Cache #2
The many stone walls that crisscross Nashoba Woods were built with stone quarried from boulders deposited in this area at the end of the last ice age. But one day, after generations of quarrying and building, the quarrymen packed up their tools one last time and never returned. Yet traces of their toil remain. In an region of the woods I have dubbed the “Boulder Garden,” you will find piles of split rock, chisel marks and a stone wedge left in a boulder by a quarryman long ago.
Can you find the quarryman’s wedge?
There is no clear path to this cache. Depending on the season and your direction of approach, expect to encounter thick vegetation rocky terrain and marshy ground which may be difficult to traverse after periods of heavy rainfall. Accessing this cache location from the direction of the bridge over Nashoba Brook is perhaps the most treacherous route. Seek alternatives...or embrace the challenge.
Please take note of the position of the cache container before retrieving it and be sure to return the container to it's original hiding location in order to maintain the intended level of concealment. Also, I would appreciate feedback on the condition of my containers. Each one is an experiment to make them more durable, watertight and inconspicuous. Thank you!
