Geocache Description:

Cveti sredi poletja.

  • Do katere višine v cm zraste steblo
  • Koliko endemitov je v Sloveniji
  • Katerega leta so na čast rastlini odprli naravoslovno učno pot

Fleischmann's Parsnip is a complete endemic, a plant species that grows in a single, severely limited area - in a few beds of the Botanical Garden in Ljubljana, where it is carefully restored year after year. You can see it in close proximity to the already existing cache. Without the help of gardeners, it would be difficult to survive in nature today. However, in 2011, the plant was resettled on the castle hill, where it is renewed every year. It only grows for two years and is a true Slovenian treasure among our botanists. There are twenty-two endemic species in Slovenia.

The stem is upright, usually between 30 and 100 cm high, expanded and slightly ribbed. Five ground leaves are united in a rosette. There are four to six stem leaves and they are simpler than the ground leaves. The flowers are clustered in large compound cymes, which are yellow in color and consist of tiny florets. Blooms in mid-summer. The plant forms a rosette with pinnately divided leaves the first year, and a stem up to 100 cm tall sprouts from the rosette the second year.

If ordinary parsnip's are common in nature, Fleischmann's Parsnip are a Slovenian and global specialty. Only two feathery leaves, the shape and serration of the leaves separate it from the common parsnip.

The plant was found by Andrej Fleischmann (1804-1867) in the thirties of the 19th century on the slope of Ljubljana's castle hill and later planted in the Botanical Garden, where it has been preserved until today. The plant is said to have grown on the castle hill until 1840, but since the middle of the 19th century, botanists no longer find it on the original site.

In 2016, in honor of this plant, the natural history trail "Fleischmann's Parsnip " was opened, which connects the Botanical Garden and the Ljubljana Castle. The trail is also presented in a brochure that guides visitors from today's site in the garden to the site in the castle courtyard, while warning also to other representatives of the rich flora of Castle Hill and the habitats on it.

The logbook is locked, to get to it, you need to add up some numbers:

  • In what year was the discoverer of Fleischmann's Parsnip born
  • How long does Fleischmann's Parsnip grow?
  • To what height in cm does the stem grow
  • How many endemics are there in Slovenia?
  • In what year was the natural science trail opened in honor of the plant
