Geocache Description:

I was reading the paper and noticed an article about a former community in Lake Highlands right by where I lived back in the 90's.  I was intrigued to find out that the home I lived in was built on a former settlement called Little Egypt created by former slave Jeff Hill who bought this tract of land in 1883.  The community consisted of the Egypt Chapel Baptist Church and a one-room school in addition to a number of homesteaders.  For more than 70 years this community maintained its rural characteristics despite the growing encroachment of urban development.  In 1962, the entire community collectively sold their property to a developer and moved out.  The church was relocated to south Dallas where it remains as a testament to African American accomplishment and perseverance in Texas.

One of the reasons I love caching is because of the opportunity to learn some history - this spot really spoke to me because of the proximity to the first home I ever purchased - in effect BE Viking's first homestead 100+ years later.
