The folds you see in the strata across the street were created about 260 million years ago when the coast of Morocco, Africa (part of the supercontinent of Gondwana) collided with North America and telescoped the strata causing the Appalachian Fold-belt. The end result was a mountain chain of Himalayan proportions. Erosion over those millions of years has reduced the mountains down to the Applachains that we love today. In this formation, you are seeing the very core of that deformation.
