Geocache Description:


This is the third geocache that 1st Stanhope Scouts has placed as part of their Geocaching Scout badge.

At the same time as doing their Geocaching badge they have also been working towards their Local Knowledge badge. As part of this they have been to visit the Weardale Museum in Ireshopeburn, a short drive up the dale...well worth a visit! When looking for a place to put this cache, one of the Scout Leaders noticed the house at the end of this path (next to Crawleyside bank)  which has a sign on it saying: Ashes Engine House. 

Intrigued by the house sign and seeking out more Local Knowledge to impart to the Scouts they knocked on the door to find out more. Thankfully someone was in, and was happy to give some information: It was a former Engine shed, used to repair and store locomotive engines used to pull the train cars, presumably for nearby Ashes Quarry.
