Geocache Description:

This series highlights Canada's stunning parks and sites that protect the environment and showcases the various historic aspects of our country. Parks Canada protects and administers 37 national parks, 10 national park reserves, 171 (out of 1004) national historic sites, 5 national marine conservation areas, and one national urban park (as of 2023).

Forillon NP (Quebec) has a very high concentration of geological formations (10) and constitutes the Appalachians’ northeasternmost tip in North America. Rocks in the park present a wide diversity of fossils dating to three distinct geological periods: the Ordovician, Silurian and Devonian. The first inhabitants of the Penouille peninsula were the Mi'gmaq and their ancestors from about 4000 years ago. Archaeological excavations conducted on the Penouille Peninsula have produced a great amount of flaking debris, indicating the presence of lithic workshops. Numerous tools and several traces of fire pits provide evidence of craft-making and various domestic activities. The great quantity of potsherds found on Penouille make it the Gaspé’s most important site for representing the Woodland period (associated with pottery). Subsequent populations and activities include the French regime with its fishing stations, the English regime where families arrived in the area, the typical Gaspe fishing village of Grande-Grave, farming in the L'Anse-au-Griffon valley, the 1873 Cape Gaspe lighthouse, and the World War II Fort Peninsula shore battery, where - from 1942 to 1944 - German submarines entered the St. Lawrence Gulf and River and sank 23 Allied ships.
