Tervaa on poltettu Suomessa vuosisatojen ajan. Tervanpolton kulta-aika sijoittuu 1800-luvulle, jolloin tervaa poltettiin omien tarpeiden lisäksi vientitavaraksi ulkomaille etenkin laivanrakennusteollisuuden tarpeisiin. Pihkaisesta männystä pilkotut tervakset ladotaan kasaksi ja peitetään turpeilla sekä maalla polttoa varten. Teollisesti tuotettavaa tervaa käytetään edelleenkin etenkin puumateriaalien suoja-aineena, mutta myös hajusteissa ja kosmetiikassa. Suomessa ylläpidetään kuitenkin perinteisen tervanvalmistuksen menetelmien osaamista mm. perinneseurojen toimesta.
Kätkön läheisyydessä Ilvesreitin varrella sijaitsee vanha tervahauta, jota on käytetty 1950-luvulle saakka Räyskälässä etenkin kyläläisten omiin tarpeisiin. Hauta tulee kiinni Ilvesreittiin ja se sijaitsee noin 200 metriä kätköltä luoteeseen. Polkujen risteyksen eteläpuolelta löytyvä muisto Räyskälän tervanpoltosta näkyy maastossa noin 15 m kokoisena kraaterimaisena painaumana, jonka ympärillä on tiivis lehtipuukasvusto.

Tar has been burned in Finland for centuries. The golden age of tar burning takes place in the 19th century, when tar was burned not only for own needs, but also as an export item abroad, especially for the needs of the shipbuilding industry. Tars chopped from pitch pine are piled up and covered with peat and earth for burning. Industrially produced tar is still used especially as a preservative for wood materials, but also in perfumes and cosmetics. In Finland, however, expertise in traditional tar manufacturing methods is maintained, e.g. by traditional societies.
Near the cache, along the Ilvesreitti, there is an old tar grave, which was used until the 1950s in Räyskälä, especially for the villagers' own needs. The grave is connected to Ilvesreitti and is located about 200 meters northwest of the cache. The memory of Räyskälä's tar burning, found on the south side of the path crossing, can be seen in the terrain as a crater-like pit about 15 m in size, surrounded by a dense growth of hardwood trees.
