Il Castello di San Martino della Vaneza è una fortificazione del periodo medievale. Il primo nucleo dovrebbe essere sorto nell’XI secolo e comprendeva solamente la torre, un po’ più bassa dell’attuale, in trachite euganea; secondo il mio parere personale le mura perimetrali dovrebbero essere coeve. Fu uno dei pochi castelli a sopravvivere alle devastazioni di Ezzelino III da Romano, signore della Marca Trevigiana, e nel 1324 passò ai Carraresi secondo il volere del comune di Padova: questi attuarono importanti lavori di restauro e ampliamento nella cinta muraria, negli edifici interni e nella torre, donandole l’aspetto attuale con le merlature guelfe in laterizio. Con il dominio veneziano le funzioni difensive vennero meno: nel 1405 la Serenissima decise di affidare il castello alla nobile famiglia Vendramin che lo trasformò in un centro di raccolta e smistamento del legname proveniente dalle aree circostanti, il quale veniva poi trasportato attraverso il Bacchiglione. Nel 1439 costruirono anche un mulino natante, che funzionò fino all’Ottocento. Oggi il mulino non esiste più e il Castello è di proprietà della Provincia di Padova, che nel 1995 vi ha allestito il Museo archeologico del fiume Bacchiglione: il complesso è visitabile su prenotazione o durante i vari eventi pubblici che vi si svolgono.

The Castle of San Martino della Vaneza is a fortification from the medieval period. The first nucleus should have arisen in the 11th century and included only the tower, a little lower than the current one, in Euganean trachyte; in my personal opinion the perimeter walls should be coeval. It was one of the few castles to survive the devastation of Ezzelino III da Romano, lord of the Marca Trevigiana, and in 1324 it passed to the Carraras according to the will of the municipality of Padua: the family carried out important restoration and expansion works in the walls, in the internal buildings and in the tower, giving it its current appearance with Guelph brick battlements. With Venetian rule, the defensive functions ceased: in 1405 the Serenissima decided to entrust the castle to the noble Vendramin family who transformed it into a collection and sorting center for timber from the surrounding areas, which was then transported across the Bacchiglione. In 1439 they also built a floating mill, which worked until the 19th century. Today the mill no longer exists and the Castle is owned by the Province of Padua, which in 1995 set up the Archaeological Museum of the Bacchiglione River: the complex can be visited by reservation or during the various public events that take place there.
