Best Girl was one of the first geocachers I met. Thanks to Geocaching, I know it was on August 11, 2019 in Inver Grove Heights, right around 2:00pm. I had headed out to a FTF, which she had beat me to. I didn’t know it until I was actually searching for the cache and saw her log come through. She had been writing it up in her minivan parked nearby. She came out and joined me in a fun game of hot or cold. She made it even more challenging by actually standing right next to the cache, so I looked everywhere else in the area before actually hunting there so as to not invade her personal space. After I signed in, we talked for a bit, and then she suggested we go find another nearby cache. She wasn’t the quickest of walkers, but I enjoyed her company so I strolled along next to her, learning whatever geocaching tips she would impart.

She was always the sweetest, most genuine person every time I saw her afterwards, whether it was at an event, FTFs, or wherever. I just re-read her write-up on my 20k tribute cache and got both a smile on my face and a lump in my throat. Nancy may have only been one half of a geocaching team, but her loss has left a big hole in the Twin Cities geocaching community.                    from TJ of TJnAJ

We have attended 60+ of the same events as Holy Strollers. Our first with them was a breakfast buddies event in St. Cloud where we spent a chunk of the day caching together. That is how we got to know Nancy. She was always one of our favorite cachers to talk to and just to spend time with. On many occasions she would seek us out at an event to check in and see how we were both doing. She was someone who really showed you how much she cared about you.

One event I remember was the MnGCA Fall event of 2016. Nancy and I had a conversation where we found out that we both have the same facial pain all because Nancy asked me how I was. That lead to a friendship and understanding that will be very hard to replace.

On the 12th of February of 2022, I attended an event solo and it was cold out. I was about to leave and needed to warm up. As I was walking to my van, I saw Bob and he said Nancy was in the car. I walked over to Nancy and she invited me into her warm van so we could chat. We must have talked for a couple of hours.

I remember during covid we were chasing FTFs for a challenge. It was dark out and we were driving to the Hopkins area. We were a couple of miles away when the Holy Strollers logged the cache. We contacted them and they turned around to meet us at the cache. They both were so gracious to share the FTF with us. We all hung out for a while for the FTF party.

Nancy was so kind even when she was in a lot of pain. She enjoyed going to events and talking with others. It was not about the number of caches they found, it was about the journey and who they met along the way.                   from Lemer & Jeanie

We’ve never seen Nancy without a smile. She might wait in car for folks to walk by to talk with them.
She couldn’t walk fast, didn’t use a GPS but could see a hiding spot before folks with technical equipment saw the hidden object.
She cared a great deal for her family.  Nancy was a good Cacher and made a good friend.                       from two of hearts

We first met Bob and Nancy at a first to find opportunity in April 2015 at a stop light by Lund’s Grocery in Bloomington (98th and Lindale). We were a few minutes late to the party and they refused to share FTF honors with us (great first impression)…haha Truth is, they definitely would have shared if one of the actual FTF hounds that was on the scene right away had not left already.

After this first encounter, we ended up with many FTF’s shared with this dynamic duo of cachers. It was always fun to see them at newly published caches, and it seemed that no matter what, one of the four of us would be able to find the cache, no matter how challenging. Often we would call each other to see if the other was on the way to a new cache, other times we just ran into them at GZ, unplanned.

Nancy, aka Best Girl, was truly exceptional at finding evil caches. This is likely due to her keen mind for hiding similarly evil caches in the first place. She was gifted at this! We often rode together to farther away places and talked about some great ways to be devious!

We have so many truly blessed memories of Best Girl. We enjoyed getting to know them more and more over the past 8 years; sharing our faith in our one true savior, Jesus Christ, talking about raising children, caching, traveling, and health issues. Our geodaughter is a brain tumor survivor and she had so many things to share with Nancy; they actually became fairly good caching buddies, or kindred spirits, that leaned on each other in an attempt to progress slowly, but in a straight path. J

We learned a lot from Nancy:

1. How to hide the evilest of caches
2. What does it mean to “embrace your inner Hockabee”
3. How to patiently wait for others to find the cache even if you already found it. The “Holy Stroller Game” as it doesn’t always have to be “me first” to the log
4. How to be kind to everyone around you, listen like they truly matter to you
5. Take time for Chicken McNuggets, happy meal toys, and a kiss with your best mate before every meal
6. Warm chocolate chip cookies are awesome in the winter
7. Events can be a blast
8. You can actually have a buffet of medicine in geocaching containers (bison tubes)

We miss Nancy dearly. The caching community will truly never be the same without her. We loved that she was eager to drive (as we actually didn’t want to anyway), and that she was always interested in going out anytime we called. We wish she never had to deal with her illnesses and pain but we feel she is truly blessed and at peace now with our savior!

We hope you enjoy our brief tribute to Best Girl, Nancy Nelson. May she rest in peace.                        from agate mickey
