Cardiff is a quiet hamlet about 10km south of Collie. Numerous quaint workers cottages remain from the days when the Cardiff Coal Company was established to mine coal nearby. The Cardiff Coal Company (later the Collie Coal Company, then Amalgamated Collieries of W.A. Limited) operated from the early 1900s to 1960.
Cardiff School opened in 1924 and ran for 26 years until its closure in 1950. The cache is hidden at the former school site. The old School Master's House is adjacent to the site, and is now a private residence.
