Once again the Get Useless in Eustis event is back at the Stratton-Eustis Community Building!
The 16th Annual "Get Useless In Eustis" event will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023, in Stratton, Maine. The Community Building (posted coords are for there) has been reserved for that day and the doors will open at 7:00 AM. There will be the usual breakfast of pancakes, and sausage plus whatever other yummies folks want to bring to share. There will also be bottomless coffee, tea, and cocoa. Food will be on an "as long as it lasts" basis. At 8:00 AM there will be some new geocaches published. The building will be open all day for hot coffee, restrooms, and a place to meet friends, get warm, and talk about all things geocaching.
The large group site # 1 has been reserved at Cathedral Pines Campground, directly across the street from the main campground and about four miles north of the Community Building. This allows you may camp for free Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Or you may reserve and pay for your own private site in the main campground by calling 207-246-3491. The group site has a fire pit, picnic tables, and an outhouse but you may also use any of the facilities at the main campground: hot showers, flush toilets, a rec room, a playground, and a swim beach. You can also rent canoes and kayaks nearby. You can leave a $10.00 deposit at the office, you will get a card that allows you access when the gates are locked. The $10.00 is refundable if you turn the card in at the office when you leave. Alcoholic beverages and dogs ARE allowed here. The weather can be cold so plan accordingly. The traditional post-event campfire will be held at the group site. If you are not camping in the group site please park along the Eustis Ridge Rd, as parking gets very congested. All cachers are welcome to attend, whether camping or not.
Not into camping? We have four motels and two B&Bs. Please reserve early so you won't miss out on all the fun. Book your reservation early as they do fill up.
The legendary potluck dinner will be held at 5:00 PM. Please show off your culinary prowess by bringing something delicious to share: meats, casseroles, soups, stews, and desserts. Crockpots are great for cooking or warming what you bring, anything to fill up hungry cachers who have spent the day in the woods. If you can't bring something from home, you can cook here or bring big jugs of iced tea, or soft drinks or pick up a hot pizza or two. Please don't bring snacks, we don't have room to put them out and they don't fit the menu.
We always need help setting up the tables the evening before the event. And help is especially appreciated in cleaning up the building after the event and putting away the tables and chairs. Contact Mainiac1957 or Quilting Mom if you have availability to assist. Also if you have an hour or so to give us a break from watching the hall that would be great. Let one of us know so we can plan.
In Eustis you can cache, kayak, hike, climb mountains, drive dirt logging roads, enjoy the foliage or do the Tim Pond power run or the geoart caches. And don't forget to drive up Quill Hill for great views of the foliage. A donation is welcomed for using the privately owned road to the top.
