Our jigsaw photo was taken along Strathmore Road, or the Arrilalah-Isisford Road between the Thomson River and the Thomson Developmental Road, one of the many crossings of the Ernestine Creek, which flows westward into the Thomson River. You will cross this very point when caching the Longreach Fantasy Trail to Isisford and Ilfracombe. This is probably a semi-permanent water hole typical of the many creeks and rivers in western outback Queensland. Fishing? Maybe the odd Yabby or two. Mostly good as a watering hold for cattle.
But in caching this, the jigsaw trail, you have been along the eastern then western banks of the Thomson River.
The Thomson River starts at an elevation of 215m at Torrens Creek, inland from Charters Towers, and ends at an elevation of 130m at Cooper Creek. Its waters then flow into Lake Eyre (if it does not evaporate beforehand). However, its waters never reach the sea.
At the Longreach Waterhole (185m long), you could catch catfish, golden perch, silver perch and yabbies. Along the river you could also see Australian Pelican, Brolga, Emu, Galah, \Little Corella, Little Crow, red-tailed Black-Cockatoo, Straw-necked Ibis and Whistling Kite.
Facilities at Thomson River include a boat ramp, and it is a good place for canoeing, fishing, jet skiing, swimming and water skiing.
