By a corner of a man's dream.
Driving past the Castle I noticed something new – a gravel parking area, a large grassy field being mowed, several portapotties and trash bins, and a box of small American flags! Succumbing to curiosity, I drove in and asked the driver of a truck there what this was. Was it a park? The precursor to more commercial development?
No, he said, it's the dream of the crazy man out there on the field mower – to have his own soccer fields for his own soccer teams. It transpired that the “crazy man” was his father, a local chiropractor; and his passion was soccer. “If you know local soccer,” the son said, “you know my father!”
He said his father had had a smaller 5-acre field elsewhere, but the authorities there wouldn't allow the use he envisioned. And it wasn't large enough either. So he bought 10 acres out here in Hyde Park, and built his own soccer field. And someday you may see teams playing here.
Is this story true? I don't know, but it delighted me. Do we have a Richard V. Hansen in the making? Or is he already there? If anyone knows more about this man and the story of this field, please tell us in your log!
There is room to pull off to the side of the road by the cache in summer. (As of Summer 2025, 4200 North nearest the soccer fields is signed No Parking. You can still park on 200 West heading north. The map shows 200 West extending south from 4200 North but do not park there -- there is no road!)
You do not need to go onto the soccer fields to seek the cache. You will need to go a few steps into the farmer's field.
Congratulations to desert_dawg and cachefinder24315 for navigating the road construction maze for a shared FTF!
This cache is part of the series, MountainHobbit's Mathoms, Year 17. Don't know what a mathom is? Check out Chapter 1 in the Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien to find out the reason for this hobbity celebration!
