Geocache Description:

mOSquito City

mOSquito City

Mosquitoes are a family of insects that includes about 3,600 species. The adult females of most species have tube-like mouthparts that can pierce the skin of a host and feed on blood, which contains protein and iron needed to produce eggs. When sucking blood, the mosquito injects a secretion into the human, which causes skin changes and itching, and which can also be the cause of disease.

Osijek is notorious for the large number of mosquitoes that terrorize residents during the spring and summer months, and an indication of the severity of this problem is that the city is unofficially named the "Croatian mosquito capital". The reasons for this are the favorable climate (Moderately warm humid climate with hot summers - Cfb) and the city's location along the Drava River, but the primary „culprit“ is the immediate proximity of Kopački rit. Namely, Kopački rit is one of the largest Croatian wetlands, which serve as perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes (together with undrained puddles and temporarily flooded areas).

The people of Osijek and Baranja are trying to get rid of the bloodsucker infestation in numerous ways. One of the most interesting is the "MOS-Cross 2" project. As part of this project, illuminated billboards for mosquito control were installed at several locations in Osijek and the surrounding area. These billboards attract mosquitoes in a way that mimics human breath and smell, and the mosquitoes are attracted to the board and remain trapped. Theoretically, a billboard can attract about 30,000 mosquitoes in a 12-hour period.

The cache is not at the posted coordinates, but on them you can find one of the panel-collectors that serves as a mosquito trap. In obtaining the final coordinates, the display of "catch" from the panel (of course, fictitious) located in the picture below can help you.
