The K6 phone box, or kiosk, is the 6th style developed by the post office. Sometimes referred to as the jubilee kiosk, it was designed in 1935, the year of King George V silver jubilee. It has the Crown of Scotland on all four sides and was produced in Glasgow. This one was purchased by donations from the communities of Garmouth & Kingston and refurbished by volunteers.
Garmouth is an ancient village. In 1587 it was made a Burgh of Barony, which meant it was entitled to construct a harbour and hold annual fairs for selling goods and hiring farm workers. The annual Maggie Fair is still held on the last Saturday of June each year. No harbour infrastructure was built, but ships were unloaded about half a mile away in Kingston on Spey. Amongst other exports, was timber felled and floated down the River Spey, used to make ships at the Royal Naval Dockyards in Woolwich and wooden pipes for the supply of water in London. Ship building continued in Kingston for some 100 years. The railway line closed in 1968 but the railway bridge across the River Spey is now a footpath to Spey Bay and the long distance Speyside Way. It is also part of the National Cycle Network Route 1...1695 miles from the Shetland Islands to Dover. Visit the Water Tower that provided piped water to the villages of Garmouth & Kingston with fine views out across the Moray Firth.
The Garmouth & Kingston Community Hub has seating, a small exhibition on local history, a Victorian water pump for a refill, accessible toilet and refreshments by donation.
