Geocache Description:

Park at the parking coordinates to the Southwest.  The cache is not accessible from the North or East.

Wild turkeys were extirpated (disappeared) in Minnesota prior to 1970.  In 1971 and 1973 the DNR helped release 29 adult wild turkeys from Missouri into Houston County in extreme Southeastern Minnesota.  Since that time the Minnesota DNR estimates that Minnesota now has more than 70,000 wild turkeys.

Wild turkeys are now present in the lower 1/2 of Minnesota.  They have thrived and are now present even in suburban and metropolitan areas.   Unlike most other birds, turkeys stay in Minnesota all year around.  Wild turkeys form flocks of six to 40 birds.   They are active during the day and roost in trees overnight.
