Henry Travis Maynard was born in Westchester County, New York, February 18, 1816.  He spent the first 29 years of his life in Chenango County, New York.  In 1838, he married Charity Rosa.  They were blessed with 4 children; Schuyler, Hester Ann, wife of T.S. Barnes, Edwin who died when he was 2, and Gustavus.  In 1845 he moved his family to Belvidere, Illinois.  His wife died in 1847 and Henry married Amelia Greene.  They had eight children; Ellen, wife of Col, Brown, Fannie, wife of Dorr Godfrey, Henry, Emmer, John, William, and Clarion.  William died at 10 years old and Clarion at age 1 1/2 of diphteria.  The three youngest were born in Maynard.  In 1851, Henry laid the first claim to land in Harlan Township, north of main street in Maynard, and moved there in 1861.  Henry passed away at the age of 87 on March 8, 1903.

The settlement of Maynard was originally called Long Grove.  There was another Long Grove in southeastern Iowa.  In honor of Henry Maynard, who donated some of his land as the first site for the first depot, Judge Green renamed it "Maynard".
