Welcome to the newly restored Hansen Wildlife Area! This prairie has been donated to Cerro Gordo County by the Hansen. It was once tilled farm land but it has been lovingly restored back to prairie by the Hansens and is protected by an easement with the county. There are no trails only wildflowers growing freely. If you choose to walk the prairie, here are some flowers you might see: White Wild Indigo, Orange Butterfly Milkweed, Pale Indian Plaintain, Creamy Gentian, Lead Plant, Compass Plant, Tall Cinquefoil, Pale Purple Coneflowers, Common Milkweed, Prairie Coreopsis just to name a few.
There is a little Yellow Parsnip finding it's way into the prairie so watch out for that!
You don't need to go into the prairie to find my cache. It's a park and grab kind of cache but do take a minute to enjoy the wonders of the prairie and imagine what Iowa looked like 150 years ago.
