Geocache Description:

Welcome to the New York Public Library system! This cache has limited hours of availability, which are listed below on the cache page. To find this cache, you are going to have to solve a small field puzzle using the posted coordinates on this cache page.

***WOW!!! Geocachers who have found at least 4 NYPL caches are eligible for a Level 1 bronze prize! Geocachers who find at least 8 NYPL caches are eligible for a Level 2 silver prize! And any geocachers that have found 12 or more NYPL caches are eligible for the Level 3 GOLD prize as well! If you think you qualify, please send me a note and I will get your prizes out to you.

Did you know that every branch of the New York Public Library offers free Wi-Fi? That's great news for all geocachers visiting from out of town!

In 2017 I was notified by the New York City Geocaching Community that the NYPL Series of caches had won the award for Best Series in NYC that year!! I am so glad that the series has continued to grow since then and that this cache is now part of it!

Wardriving is the act of searching for Wi-Fi wireless networks by a person in a moving verhicle, using a portable computer or PDA. Wardriving was derived from the term wardialing from the 1983 film WarGames, which involved searching for computer systems to connect to, using software that dialed numbers sequentially to see which ones were connected to a fax machine or computer.

This is a 3-stage multi cache. The first waypoint is an 802.11b wireless access point. You do not need to actually find the access point, you just need to receive and decode the WiFi signal from it. You do not need to connect to the access point - in fact there is nothing connected to it.

At the posted coordinates, you should be able to receive a signal from a number of WiFi Access Points. You will have to determine which ONE is of use to you in order to find the next stage, which is located on the 3rd floor of the library. Stage 2 and the final are both located inside the library.

While this type of cache has been done before by others, I want to give specific thanks to nikcap whose WarDriving (GC4W7G7) cache was my inspiration for creating a similar cache with a different spin.
