The Bulman bridge is a part-through bowstring arch truss. Named for the county commisoner responsible for its construction. It carried vehicular traffic over its original location at the Leon River, east of The city of Hamilton. The King Bridge Company of Clevland, Ohio constructed this bridge in 1884. At 85 FT, it is the longest of five remaining bowstring arch bridges in Texas. The abutments of this bridge contain stones from the piers which supported the bridge in it's original location.
A bowstring arch has an arch or "BOW" as the primary compression member and a lower chord or "STRING" that is placed in tension. Squire Whipple patened this truss design in 1841. It became widespread by the 1870's because it was more economical to build than other truss types. Bowstring arch bridges demonstrate efficiency through a high carrying capacity while using comparatively small quanity of materials. The Texas Department of Transportation in partnership with the City of Hamilton, Hamilton County, and the Federal Highway Administration rehabilitated and moved the bridge to Pecan Creek Park, where it continues its legacy as a pedestrian bridge.
